“Conserving Choke Watershed is the Primary responsibility of the community”Mr. Gedu Andargachew

DMU: Debre Markos University conducts a discussion to enhance the conservation and development of Choke Watershed through inclusive community conservation practice at the presence of the President of Amhara National Regional State Mr. Gedu Andargachew, regional higher officials and non-governmental organizations delegates.
The President of Debre Markos University Dr. Tafere Melaku in his welcoming speech addresses that Choke Watershed is one of hotspot biodiversity areas in Ethiopia in terms of the bio diversity and Natural Resources endowed. It is crystal clear that Choke watershed is rich with biodiversity, indigenous plants and animals, and it is also source of many rivers including Blue Nile. However, Choke has faced a serious threat due to manmade and natural disasters. Thus, the regional government, the Zonal and Woreda Administration bodies in line with Debre Markos University and the community should work in collaboration to conserve and preserve Choke Watershed, Dr. Tafere emphasized.
In the discussion programme the UNDP Delegate Mrs. Wubwa Mekonnen, in her Keynote speech says that unless we conserve nature it cannot conserve us. Thus, we should conserve nature especially nature with full of biodiversity otherwise we will face difficulties.
The National Biodiversity Initiative and Inclusiveness Manager Mr. Abdeta Debella, says that mount Choke is not only useful for Ethiopians but also it is important for countries in the stream. About 14 woredas are organized to assure food security in relation to Natural Resource conservation and payment for ecosystem service since it is the major objective of the project, he added.
The Director of Debre Markos University Choke Watershed Research and Development Project Directorate Mr.Abiyot Molla states that Debre Markos University in collaboration with stakeholders is working jointly for the conservation of Choke Watershed. The directorate has given capacity building trainings and made integrated Agricultural Resources activities on crop production, animals’ food, vegetables and fruits, Mr. Abiyot added.
The Head of East Gojjam Zone Rural Land Administration Mr. Daniel Desalegn states about the activities done on the demarcation of the protected area, experiences they shared, problems encountered in protecting the area from harm and possible solutions taken.
During the discussion Mr.Gedu Andargachew, the President of Amhara Regional State President; Mr. Abrham Alehegne, East Gojjam Zone Administrator and Mr.Kebede Yimam, Federal Environmental Forest and Climatic Change Deputy Commissioner, discuss with the participants on Choke Watershed Inclusive Community Conservation Project.
During the final remark, Mr. Gedu reaffirms that Choke Watershed must be Protected and conserved. Thus, the members of the society at the surrounding of Choke are the primary block of people who shall conserve the watershed as the opportunities and challenges are for them.
