Debre Markos University Community Service Directorate gives awareness creation training on the increment of Urban Agriculture

Debre Markos University Community Service Directorate gives awareness creation training formore than 20 Debre Markos town Agricultural experts’ and 100 dwellers of Debre Markos town who engaged in the project in poultry production and urban greening with urban agriculture.

Assistance Professor Demisachew, Debre Markos University Agriculture and Natural Resource Management instructor, says that the University is doing numerous activities including Free Legal Aid services, awareness creation and capacity building trainings and Urban Greening with Urban Agriculture.

The discussion will enable the participants to have clear awareness to take care of the chickens and increase product and productivity on the cultivation of vegetables to improve the livelihood of them and increase their income, he added.

Doctor Mulat Kasaye, Agriculture and Natural Resource Management College Dean, opening the training stage states that Debre Markos University Agricultural College is doing several things to advance the traditional agriculture and increase product and productivity through Rural Agriculture and Urban Agricultures. Urban Agriculture is what the participants are engaged in poultry production and vegetables production within limited area applying technical methods in line with the trainings they had from the college, Doctor remarked.

Therefore, participants need to be models for others and the University will continue supporting them in creating awareness since the resource which the University has is human resource (knowledge) Doctor Mulat added.

Product and productivity can be assured through the selection of offspring, feeding and management. Thus, the training will help the trainees to be clear of these and be productive, he concluded.

Mr. Mengistu Belay, and Mr. Misganaw Addis, Agriculture and Natural Resource Management instructors present discussion points on poultry production and vegetable production with urban greening Agriculture respectively.

Mengstu states that the objectives of the projects are improving the livelihood of the community, increasing income and improving the health condition of the community.

Finally, on the discussion held with the participants, they appreciated and thanked the University for supporting and building their capacity in practicing urban agriculture through poultry production and vegetable. The University shall continue and widen its support and capacity building programs, the participants recommended.
