Debre Markos University trains on leech control for Animal health experts

DMU: Debre Markos University Community Service Directorate has done tremendous activities to solve the society problems either by carrying out scientific research and/or transferring the research results to the community. Sometimes, the community also quest to inteven on there problems when the case is totally immediate and danger.

In such manner, questions raise from the communities on leech that hurts the animals’ health. Debre Markos University is considerably addressing the question of the community to prevent leech in East Gojjam Zone, SinanWoreda, Yetsed Chira wonz Streams.

Dr. MihiretAlemayehu, Debre Markos University community Service Directorate Director, during the opening of the training states that Ethiopia is the place where huge amount of cattle production, however, the people are less beneficial due to many problems related with cattle. Leech is one of the prominent and problem in Ethiopia in general and highly exacerbate in Eastern Gojjam Zone in particular. Therefore, Debre Markos University Community Service directorate with the initiative of agriculture college animal science department staffs carrying out practical activities to control leech once and for all.

On the training, animal health experts from East Gojjam Zone are participated to harness knowledge regarding on leech control aiming at disseminating information for the community at large where they live with to avoid leech that is spreading easily and devastating highly.

Dr. BerhanuAlemu, Debre Markos University College of agriculture animal science department instructor on his turn taught experts practically on Chirawonz how to avoid leech from different streams. He also practically tried and found effective of leech controlling on Chirawonz- SinanWoreda and would be practiced to all woredas in Zone on the package compiled by Ethiopia federal Democratic Republic Agriculture Ministerin 1999.

In doing so, the chemical so called (E-44) Enidod /local plant/ species is bought from Agrisaft Ethiopia Company then they poured over the streams so that the chemical killed the leech parasite immediately.

Finally, Dr. Berhanu and all the experts are agreed upon to work strongly on leech control all over the districts in East Gojjam and others.
