Message

Department of Surgery at Debre- Markos School of Medicine was established in 2007 E.C which was previously as a unit under a clinical coordinator in the college of health science and Medicine.   The department is staffed with 1 full –time general surgeon, two general surgeons and 1 orthopedic surgeon jointly employed with Debre-Markos Referral Hospital, 5 full –time general practitioner medical doctors and 5 jointly employed general practitioner medical doctors.  In addition to the teaching –learning process, the department provides clinical community services /curative and preventive/ to district but geographically close hospitals including Lumame, Dejen, Mota, F/Selam, Burea hospitals and health centers from Debre- Marcos town and different woredas of Wolega and Selale from Oromia region.

The Department is organized into 4 case teams: emergency case team, out-patient case team, in-patient /ward / case team and operation case team. Each is remarkable in its own right.  Each team provides the clinical service according to the protocols and supports the teaching –learning process.

Our surgical academic programs are on the design process to provide an outstanding experience at all levels.  The curriculum is prepared for medical students to function as an independent MD in order to practice minor elective and emergency surgical procedures upon graduation.

The Department of Surgery can serve as a source of data for investigators spanning the continuum from basic science through translational studies to clinical research.

In order to achieve all the goals, the department is giving specialty training chances to the graduate medical doctors. Currently there are more than 6 general surgery residents at different universities of the country in the field of general surgery and orthopedics.  We have also planned to provide sponsor ship for specialists in sub-specialty training program in the country as well as abroad. The Department is one of the most successful disciplines in the university.
