Research and Community Service

Conducting research and providing community service are the major responsibilities of universities. Accordingly, Debre Markos University (DMU) is doing its level best in carrying out problem-solving research & demand-driven community service. To successfully accomplish these missions, the university has organized the research and community service wing being headed by a vice president since November 2012.

The Research and Community Service Vice President Office is structured under three directorates; namely, Research and Publication, Community Service, and Haddis Alemayehu Institute of Cultural Studies. These directorates are working to attain the vision of the University to be the leading center of excellence in research and community service by 2020 and to ultimately improve livelihood of the society.

The University surrounding is endowed with different research potentials. The Choke Mountains located 39 Kilometers North of Debre Markos which are water towers of the region and the source of many tributaries of the Blue Nile River, the Nile Valley located 70 Kilometers South East of the town, the traditional church schools and monasteries such as Mertu le Mariam, Dima Giorgis and Debre Elias that have hosted the priceless cultural heritages, the University surrounding diverse agro-ecological zones (ranging from extreme lowland, i.e, 1,100 meters above sea level to extreme highland more than 4,100 metre above sea level), and the millions of hardworking farmers in the Univer

sity locality that supply the major agricultural products for the country are the immense potentials for research and community service undertakings.
