Debre Markos University (DMU), in collaboration with Agri-Service Ethiopia, conducted a joint review session with stakeholders to evaluate the performance of an integrated capacity-building and development project implemented in the Shebel Berenta Woreda of the East Gojjam Zone.<\/p>\n

During the review, Dr. Melkamu Bezabih, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer at DMU, stated that the project has been operational since 2022 GC. It is funded by a budget of \u20ac600,000 (Euros) through a partnership between DMU, the international organization “Bread for the World,” and Agri-Service Ethiopia.<\/p>\n

The project has been implemented primarily focusing on food security and income generation.Climate change adaptation and Natural resource management.<\/p>\n

Dr. Yiheyis Arehu, Vice President for Academic Affairs, in his speech on the program, noted that the initiative has been active across nine drought-prone kebeles in the district since April 2022. He highlighted several successes, such as, increasing the economic participation of women, creating job opportunities for youth, improving access to clean drinking water and introducing modern agricultural production techniques.<\/p>\n

On the occasion, Mr. Girma Alem, Director of the Community Service Directorate, provided a detailed report on specific infrastructure and aid activities implemented by the project. As he presented, in relation to agriculture,\u00a0 a veterinary clinic is constructed and poultry, sheep, and goat breeding programs are implemented. Concerning social support, the project\u00a0 provided wheelchairs for 10 people with disabilities, free legal services for 50 individuals, and shelter\/material support for displaced citizens. Educational material support for 22 schools, including 1.1 million Birr for Ambesh School and a 4-million-birr transformer for the Hadis Alemayehu Boarding School was also part of the accomplishments of the project. According to the director, The project also involved in infrastructure where over 631,000 Birr was spent on road and design studies in the Baso Liben Woreda.<\/p>\n

Mr. Temesgen Wondyifraw, Regional Coordinator of Agri-Service Ethiopia, on his part, reported that the project has reached 5,700 community members. A unique success mentioned was the multiplication of a lost “Black Wheat” variety. He also indicated that\u00a0 there are plans to “brand” Shebel Berenta’s Teff<\/em> and Chickpeas to increase their market value. He confirmed that the organization will strengthen its work in Shebel Berenta and Ennemay Woredas through 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n

Local residents, including Ato Assaye Alamrew and Kasaye Ayalew, who are beneficieries of the project, shared their experiences, noting that engaging in poultry and vegetable farming through the project has brought tangible improvements to their livelihoods.<\/p>\n
