Debre Markos University (DMU) President office serves as the central hub for conducting strategic leadership, creating conducive environment to collaborative working with a diverse faculty community, partners, students and alumni to solidify DMU’s role generally, excellence in academics and particularly, excellence in agriculture and agro-processing; culture, literature and language; and health within Ethiopia as well as globally. 

On January 24 /2024, the Ethiopian Ministry of Education announced the selection of Dr Sayeh Kassaw as the university’s sixth president. Sayeh was vice president of the university from October 14, 2015 up to August 31/2020. As a vice president, he had significant achievements, including establishment of the ICT Infrastructure of the University; successful execution of construction, infrastructure and utility projects at the head quarter as well as at Burie and Health campuses; and establishment of income generating projects of the university.

Sayeh has ample experience in management and leadership skills; and wide experience in working with communities and authorities at local, regional and national levels. Initially, joining the workforce, he had experience in the area of sustainable management of natural resources as well as leadership skills as head of the agricultural offices in different weredas in Ethiopia. He had established community based plantation sites and protected and rehabilitated degraded areas; conducted soil and water conservation activities in different watersheds; designed irrigation canals; and strategically led agriculture and rural development offices at different weredas. Since 2004, his experience has been mainly in the areas of land administration and management. He had worked as team leader of Environmental Protection, Land Administration and Use office at wereda level in which he successfully conducted the land registration and certification practices. He has also contributed in Amhara region land registration and cadastral surveying activities assigned as a land registration and cadastral surveying expert at Bureau level. Starting 2007, he has been employed at Debre Markos University as an instructor of land administration. He had been appointed as Department Head of Natural Resources Management; Dean for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources; and Vice President for Business and Development of the University. Besides, Sayeh has played a pivotal role to establishing partnership between University of Natural Resources and Life Science (BOKU), Technical University of Vienna (TUW) and Debre Markos University (DMU). This partnership enabled the partner institutions to run more than four different projects.

Sayeh has diversified educational background in which his diploma is in forestry (from Wondo Genet College of Forestry); BSc in Agricultural Extension (from Alemaya University); MSc in Land Management (KTH, Sweden); and PhD in Land Administration (from BOKU). Sayeh has conducted various research projects mainly related to land tenure security and published different articles in reputable journals. He has also participated and presented different articles to international conferences. Currently, he is Associate Prof of Land Administration at Debre Markos University.
