Medicinal Plants Used to Treat Amoebiasis in Ethiopia: A review

Abstract

Background: Amoebiasis  is  a  widespread  parasitic  disease  caused  by  the  protozoa  Entamoeba histolytica which is the causative agent of amebic dysentery and amoebic liver abscess. Amoebic dysentery from E. histolytica is the second most common cause of death parasitic diseaseworldwideaftermalaria.Currently, different groups of drugs that control intestinal protozoan parasite infections  are available everywhere, though they vary based on different age groups, endemicity of the parasite and use of antimicrobial therapy. The present review, which is the first of its kind in Ethiopia, and whose objective was to document medicinal plants used to treat amoebiasis in Ethiopia, attempted to provide alternative sources of herbal medicines to treat amoebiasis. Materials and methods: Published articles on Ethnobotany of medicinal plants used to treat amoebiasis in Ethiopia, without restriction in the year of publication or methodology, were used for this review. Studies that did not provide full information about plants used for herbal remedies to treat amoebiasis not in part of the flora list of Ethiopia were rejected from the review. Results: After adjusted duplicates, with the help of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 29 studies were found suitable for the review. A total of sixty (60) medicinal plants were identified and distributed in 56 genera and 41 families. Family Asteraceae 8 (4.8%) constituted large number of plants followed by Solonaceae, Lamiaceae and Fabaceae each accounts 4 (2.4%) and Euphorbiaceous accounts 3 (1.8 %). According to this review, Leaf part of the reviewed medicinal plants was the most commonly used part in the preparation of remedies as compared to other parts. Almost all the prepared remedy is administered through oral. Conclusion: The Flora of Ethiopia contributes diverse medicinal plants to treat amoebiasis and hence use based conservation and further pharmacological investigations benefit the community to manage their health condition.
