Prevalence and Associated Factors of Postnatal Care Service Utilization Among Mothers Who Gave Birth in Anlemo district, Ethiopia

Abstract

Postnatal care is the care of both the mother and her baby from different injuries and deaths due to childbirth within the postnatal period that mostly happens during the first month after delivery. In Ethiopia, underutilization of postnatal care remains one of the major obstacles to plummeting maternal and newborn mortality in the postpartum period. The main objective of this study was to identify the associated factors of postnatal care service utilization among mothers who gave birth in the Anlemo district. A community-based cross-sectional study was carried out from March 1 to March 21, 2021, among 362 mothers with infants aged 6 weeks to 48 weeks. A binary logistic regression model was used to identify the associated factors in postnatal care service utilization. Of the study participants, more than half (54.14%) s utilized postnatal care services. According to our findings, home-delivery mothers (AOR = 0.08, 95% CI: 0.04–0.15), women with an average monthly income below 1000 ETB (AOR = 0.33, 95% CI: 0.29–0.38), and secondary-educated women (AOR = 0.05, 95% CI: 0.01–0.60) were less likely to utilize postnatal care services, whereas women who walked at most one hour on foot to get to a health facility (AOR = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.25–2.98) and women who gave birth via spontaneous vagina (AOR = 1.3, 95% CI: (0.95–1.87) were more likely to utilize postnatal care services. However, the prevalence of postnatal care service utilization was low. As a result, the focus should be given to women who deliver at home to create awareness of the advantages of the PNC service. It is also advised that health facilities be increased to lower the distance barrier and help the country meet its PNC use goal. In addition, women with lower incomes who are prevented from receiving PNC follow-up need special consideration.
