Department of Political Science and International Relations is one of the oldest academic disciplines in the country. However, due to the establishment of higher institutions throughout the country; the field of study has been widely spread throughout Ethiopian universities with the aim to enhance political consciousness, political participation and cultures of the society. Thus, Political Science and International Relations as an academic field of study primarily concerned with the enquiry and scientific explanations of the political values, norms, principles and political cultures of a society within the framework of intellectual paradigm.
The department has started postgraduate program in Political Science in 2018, and undergraduate program in Political Science and International Relations in 2020 to train highly qualified political scientists equipped with essential requirements at minimum and to contribute its role with producing citizens who actively participate on the socio-economic and political affairs of the state. Currently, department of Political Science and International Relations department has both Bachelor Degree in regular and Post graduate programs (MA) in regular, extension and summer program.

The rationality behind opening the department of Political Science and International Relations as a field of study at Debre Markos University is inspired to address the country’s skilled man power shortage in the field of Political Science and International Relations.

The program has a general objective of training qualified experts in the field of Political Science and International Relations in accordance with the country’s need of trained human power. The fundamental objective is to train professionals within the field of Political Science and International Relations with the skill to realize & examine global, regional, and local political events from variety of perspectives and then able to contribute to the country’s socio-economic and political developments. Beyond the aforementioned objective, the department of Political Science and International Relations has the following specific Objectives:
- To produce qualified, well-informed and competent professionals with the required theoretical, technical and also responsibility taker citizens.
- To train citizens in the field of Political Science and International Relations for the country’s civil service and other related organizations
- To produce professionals with the ability to realize the theoretical and practical global political economy and their theoretical knowledge to address the actual political problems of their society.
Admission Requirements
To get an admission in Bachelor of Arts degree in department of Political Science and International Relations, learners ought to successfully complete their Secondary and Preparatory education in the stream of Social Sciences. And the learners should have Bachelor Degree in Political Science, Bachelor degree in Political Science and International Relations, Bachelor degree in Civics and Ethical Studies, Bachelor Degree in Law, Degree in Governance and Development Studies and other related subjects to join postgraduate study. Beyond this, the University shall set different entry requirements for enrollment in the continuing programs.
