Debre Markos University has the vision to become one of the top ten universities in Africa in 2030. To realize this vision the university has already given special attention to improving quality of education, expanding graduate programs, creating research culture, building the capacity of staff and infrastructure. DMU strives to realize in centre of excellence in crop production and agro-processing and Culture, literary and language development. The Directorate of the Director for Public Relation & Communication of the University is the administrative organ which has the responsibility of helping the university realizes its vision and missions through creating local and international partnerships, building effective internal and external relations and serving as the key information source for internal and external customers of the university. Hence the office works with different categories of customers: Internal stakeholders (the students, the academic and administrative staff and the management) and external stakeholders (the community, local and international partners).

Who we are
The Directorate of the Director for Public Relation & Communication has a responsibility of helping realization of the mission and vision of the university through building effective internal relation and communication, external relation and partnerships.
The Directorate has three partition, Public Relations and Communications, Foreign affairs and Alumni management and Printing press. As such the directorate has been designed as one of the pillars of the university.
What we do
We have the responsibilities of maintaining internal and external communications- creating links with other universities, issuing magazines, newsletters, brochures and flyers, holding press conferences, taking care of media relations, conducting communication audits, updating and managing the official website of the university, preparing university profiles.
Our objectives
We have a general objective of establishing effective internal and external relations by providing up-to-date information concerning activities undertaken by the university.
As such we work with different categories of customers: the external stakeholders, the students, the academic and administrative staff and the management.
The external stakeholders comprises of foreign universities, government and non-government organizations, individuals, federal and regional actors.
We communicate precise and timely information on academic issues as well as on relevant administrative matters to the university community in order to facilitate the overall academic endeavour. We also make necessary and accurate information available to both the academic and administrative staff to facilitate informed decision making.
We strive to create effective communication system among colleges, schools, institutes and directorates as well as various support service departments for a better academic excellence and service delivery.
We also organize events and public forums which add value to the inter-staff rapport among the wider university community or between external stakeholders and the university community.

The Message of the Director
Dear Debre Markos University Fresh and Senior Students, first and foremost, I would like to say Welcome to Debre Markos and Debre Markos University. Besides, I would like to appreciate fresh students’ choice to come to study here in Debre Markos University.
Debre Markos University strives to be an outstanding University since its establishment in 2007 in teaching, research and community service endeavors. Hereafter, the university also does its best to work in improving the ethics of students and ensuring peaceful academic environment, as additional missions of all admin and academic staffs.
Currently, the university offers 51 undergraduate and 46 graduate studies programmes in regular, continuing and extension as well as distance modalities at Debre Markos main campus; Burie Campus and Bichena Distance Center. In line with the increasing of the number of student’s intake capacity, the number of teachers and admin staffs is also increasing in order to improve the service of students in both quality and quantity.
The University has 10 years of experience in which around 25 thousand students have been graduated. In the experience it has realized that graduates of DMU are skillful and competent enough in their cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains. That is why, Debre Markos University gives a priority in recruiting competent instructors those intensively works on making students’ rationale and logical as well as giving priority for humanity.
Debre Markos University has acculturated working closely and collaboratively with students as a major partner. In order to improve this culture the university nurtures in seeking solution before problems are arise. In due course of this, every issue in the university will be solved jointly with students.
The Gojjam society, which the university is found, in general and Debre Markos town community in particular are humble to secure your life here in the University. Hospitality is the flagship of the society. Therefore, be sure always you have to feel as you are at home. To assure the community’s holistic support respecting the societal values of them is also your important mandate. In this manner, you have to be enthusiastic to build a bridge that connects you with society. In Gojjam, you have an opportunity to follow the pace of elites of Gojjam who were icon of the nation via successfully accomplish your study. In addition to that you have an opportunity to visit some natural and human made tourism sites in Gojjam.
Debre Markos University strongly works to make you cope up with an international standard of University student. To do this, the university appreciates diversity and condemns ethnocentrism thoughts that hinders to set peaceful learning environment in an intercultural setting. Hence, academic debate, innovativeness, humanity and rationality will be your key tools of self-improvement. This self-improvement has its own meaning to national change and development. In your study time, three, four or may be five years, you have an opportunity to manage yourself from vulnerable activities that disturbs your life journey. የተወደዳችሁ የደብረ ማርቆስ ዩኒቨርሲቲ አዲስ ገቢ እና ነባር ተማሪዎች እንኳን ወደ ደብረ ማርቆስ ከተማ እና ደብረ ማርቆስ ዩኒቨርሲቲ በሰላም መጣችሁ፡፡ ደብረ ማርቆስ ዩኒቨርሲቲን መርጣችሁ እኛ ጋ ለመማር ስለመጣችሁ ልባዊ ክብርና ደስታ እየተሰማኝ ምስጋናዬን በዩኒቨርሲቲው ማህበረሰብ ሥም ለማቅረብ እወዳለሁ፡፡
ደብረ ማርቆስ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ከተመሰረተበት 1999 ዓ.ም ጀምሮ በመማር ማስተማር፣ በምርምርና በማህበረሰብ አገልግሎት ተልዕኮዎቹ የተሻለ ሥራ በመስራት ሃገራችን ኢትዮጵያ በምታደርገው ሁለንተናዊ እንቅስቃሴ ሁሉ ተሳትፎው የላቀ የሁለተኛው ትውልድ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ነው፡፡ ዩኒቨርሲቲያችን በ2011 ዓ.ም ከሶስቱ ተልዕኮዎች በተጨማሪ በተማሪዎች ሥነ-ምግባርና ሠላማዊ የመማር ማስተማርን አካባቢ በማድረግ በኩል ተጨማሪ ተልዕኮ በማድረግ አበክሮ ይሰራል፡፡
ዩኒቨርሲቲው በአሁኑ ሰዓት በ51 የመጀመሪያ ዲግሪና በ46 የሁለተኛ ዲግሪ ፕሮግራሞች በመደበኛ እና በተከታታይ የትምህርት መርሃ ግብሮች በዋናው ግቢ እና ቡሬ ካምፓስ ተማሪዎችን ተቀብሎ ሲያስተምር የመምህራንና የአስተዳደር ሠራተኞችን ቁጥር በመጨመር ለተማሪዎች አገልግሎት አሰጣጥ ላይ ተደራሽነትና ጥራትን እያስጠበቀ ይገኛል፡፡
ባለፉት 10 ዙሮች ያስመረቅናቸው ተማሪዎች በተሰማሩበት መስክ ብቁና ተወዳዳሪ እንዲሆኑ ዩኒቨርሲቲው ብቃት ያላቸውን መምህራን በመመደብ የተማሪዎችን የዕውቀት፣ የክህሎትና የአመለካከት ለውጥ ላይ ትኩረት አድርጎ እንደሰራ ሁሉ አሁንም የተማሪዎችን ምክንያታዊ አስተሳሰብና ለሰብአዊነት ያላቸው አመለካከት ላይ ትኩረት አድርጎ በመስራት ምስጉን ተማሪዎችን ለማፍራት ይጥራል፡፡
ደብረ ማርቆስ ዩኒቨርሲቲ የተማሪዎችን ጉዳይ ተቀዳሚ ሥራው በማድረግ ከተማሪዎች ጋር በቅርበት የመስራት ባህል እንዳለው ይታወቃል፡፡ ይህንን ባህል በማሳደግ ተማሪዎች የሚገጥሟቸውን ችግሮች አስቀድሞ መፍትሄ በማፈላለግ እንደ ከዚህ ቀደሙ ተማሪዎች የዩኒቨርሲቲውን አመራር ብቻ የሚጠብቁ ብቻ ሳይሆን የመፍትሄ አካልም ሆነው በቅርበትና በአጋርነት የሚሰሩበት ግንኙነት ይኖራል፡፡
ዩኒቨርሲቲው የተመሠረተበት ማህበረሰብ የጎጃም ህዝብ ለእንግዳ የሚመች፤ ልጆችን በመንከባከብና ሲያጠፉም በመገሰፅ በኩል አብሮን የሚጓዝ በመሆኑ ለዩኒቨርሲቲያችን የአብሮነት፣ የአጋርነትና የባለቤትነት ስሜት ስለሚሰማቸው የማህበረሰቡን ማህበራዊ እሴቶች በመጠበቅ የማህበራዊ ድልድይ መገንባት ይኖርባችኋል፡፡ ጎጃም የበርካታ ምሁራን መፍለቂያ፤ በርከታ ሰው ሠራሽና ተፈጥሮአዊ መስህብ ያለው ቦታ እንደመሆኑ ከአካባቢው ማህበረሰብ ጋር በቅርበት በመሆን ለትምህርታችሁ የሚያግዛችሁን፤ ለህይወታችሁ የሚቀናችሁን ጥበብ እንደምትሸምቱበት እርግጠኛ ነኝ፡፡
ዩኒቨርሲቲያችን ከዩኒቨርሲቲ ስታንዳርድ አንፃር መጫወት ያለበትን ሚና እንዲጫወት ተማሪዎች የመጣችሁበትን አካባቢ እና እምነት በሌሎች ላይ ሳትጭኑ ሃሳብን በሃሳብ የመሞገት ባህልን በማዳበር የሃሳብ ልዕልና የሚንፀባረቅበት፤ እርስ በራሳችሁ የምትመራመሩበት፣ ብዝሃነትን የምታስተናግዱበት፣ የሃሳብ ልዩነትን የምታደንቁበት፣ ለውጥን መሸከም የሚችል አስተሳሰብ የምታስተናግዱበት መሆን ይኖርበታል፡፡ ዩኒቨርሲቲው ቅድሚያ ለሰውነትና ለሃሳብ ልዕልና በመስጠት የሚሞግት ትውልድ ለመፈጠርም አንዲት ደቂቃ በዋዛ ፈዛዛ ሳይባክን እናንተን ያበቃል፡፡
በዩኒቨርሲቲ ቆይታችሁ ወጣትነትን በመግራት ፀፀትን የማያመጣ ሥራ ላይ ብቻ በማተኮር በብዙ ችግር ውስጥ ላለች ሃገር ተጨማሪ ችግር ሳይሆን መፍትሄ መሆን ይጠበቅባችኋል፡፡ በዩኒቨርሲቲው ውስጥ የምታገኙት ሃብት ሁሉ የራሳችሁ ብሎም የታናናሾቻችሁ እንደሆነ በማሰብ የሃብት ብክነትን በመቀነስ ማህበራዊ ሃላፊነት እንዲሰማችሁ እንጠብቃለን፡፡
ዛሬ በደብረ ማርቆስ ዩኒቨርሲቲ መጥታችሁ ስትገቡ ከዛሬ ሶስት/አራት/አሊያም አምስት ዓመት በኋላ ስለምትናፍቁት ምርቃ ግብ አድርጋችሁ እንደመጣችሁ ህልማችሁን ከሚያጨናግፍ ድርጊትና እንቅስቃሴ ተቆጥባችሁ የእናንተን ህልም የቤተሰቦቻችሁን ተስፋ እውን እንደምታደርጉ አልጠራጠርም፡፡
ተማሪዎቻችንን በመቀበል በተለያዩ ዝግጅቶች ለተባበራችሁን አካላት በደብረ ማርቆስ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ሥም አመሠግናለሁ፡፡ በተረፈ በዩኒቨርሲቲያችን በሚኖራችሁ ቆይታ መልካም ፍሬ የምታፈሩበት እንደሚሆን አምናለሁ፡፡ ቆይታችሁና የትምህርት ጊዜያችሁ የደስታ፣ የሠላምና የሥኬት እንዲሆንላችሁ ከልቤ እመኛለሁ፡፡ አመሰግናለሁ፡፡

Public Relation and Communication
Ethiopia has yet to develop a critical mass of well-trained human resource able to generate and translate knowledge for societal benefit. This capacity is crucial in order to competitively articulate, negotiate, plan, implement and evaluate the country’s development strategies geared to poverty alleviation. The higher institutions in the country are responsible to undertake and encourage research, community and consultancy services in national and local priority areas. The tremendous expansion made in all levels of education as well as the growth enrollment rate of students at all levels becomes an opportunity for higher education institutions in general and Debre Markos University in particular.
Debre Markos University is one of the public universities which have a huge plan to expand quality education, demand driven researches and consultancy community services in cooperation with strategic collaborative partners. With increasing demand in higher education from the society, the university has a far reaching ambition to provide education in more accessible manner to those disadvantaged by limited time and physical distance and hence update the knowledge base of the people at their places of work.
At this time, DMU has over 2480 academic and administrative staffs. Of these, 1,158 are academic staffs. It has also above 29,619 students. Of which, 1,461 are graduate students and the rest are undergraduate students. DMU has been working hard to assure the quality & relevance of academic programs.
