The objective of directorate for International Relations of Research and Partnership is to establish and strengthen connections with institutions both locally and internationally. It aims to coordinate academic programs aligned with the University’s key priorities, facilitate faculty and student exchanges, and create an environment that supports collaborative research and projects through effective planning, leadership, and implementation.
The Directorate plays a crucial role in advancing the university’s mission in teaching, research, and community service. This office is instrumental in realizing the university’s vision of becoming one of the top 10 universities in Africa by 2030.
Recently restructured, the Directorate is now set to operate under the leadership of one director and two deputy directors. Its primary focus is on accelerating research, outreach, and project work in alignment with the university’s strategic plan. The office is responsible for establishing partnerships, both domestic and international, designing collaborative projects, and connecting the university with various global and local entities. These efforts aim to enhance the university’s educational offerings, research capabilities, and community impact, while also fostering global partnerships and generating income.
Collaboration Schemes
The directorate employs several collaboration schemes to connect with national and international institutions:
- Joint Academic and Research Projects:
Collaborating on research initiatives and academic programs that address significant issues and contribute to the creation of knowledge
- Staff And Student Exchange Programs:
Providing opportunities for staff and students to gain experience, knowledge, and skills by studying or working at partner institutions
- Staff Capacity Building Training:
Offering Master’s and PhD-level training and development opportunities to enhance staff members’ skills and knowledge
- Sharing of Knowledge and Experience:
Establishing platforms for exchanging ideas, knowledge, and best practices across various fields and disciplines
- Hosting Joint Conferences And Scientific Forums:
Organizing and participating in conferences and forums that bring together experts, researchers, and practitioners to discuss and disseminate knowledge.
- Joint Academic Programs:
Developing and delivering collaborative academic programs that benefit both students and the involved institutions.
- Joint Projects to Serve Needy Communities:
Engaging in initiatives that provide essential services to underserved communities through joint efforts

Partner Identification and Collaboration Implementation
The Directorate is actively engaged in identifying potential partners for the university. This includes reaching out to Ethiopians abroad to establish connections with organizations that have previously collaborated with Debre Markos University or those based internationally.
Additionally, the Directorate explores potential partnerships through various online platforms and networks, leveraging the expertise of university staff both within and outside the institution.
To ensure the successful implementation of its projects, the Directorate has appointed representatives across various colleges, schools, and institutions, including the Burie Campus. These representatives are responsible for monitoring and advancing collaborative efforts within their respective disciplines.
Formalizing Partnerships
For each collaboration, the Directorate ensures that the mission and objectives of potential partners align with those of Debre Markos University. Once this alignment is confirmed, the partnership is formalized through the preparation of institutional agreements. These agreements are then developed into detailed project designs, enabling active participation from the university and its faculty in the collaborative initiatives.
