Debre Markos University Community Service Directorate in collaboration with Law School, Health Science and Social Science and Humanities colleges give training on malpractices to Chertekel Kebele dwellers from 12-14 November 2016 at Haddis Alemayehu Secondary School.
Mr. Basazinew Dires, Debre Markos University Community Service Directorate Training and Consultancy Officer, States that the objective of the training is to create awareness on traditional malpractices being practiced in the community to minimize and eradicate them at large. Reminding that similar practices have been given in 2015 by the university, a training given to Libanos Kebele dwellers by 2016 has made changes towards the community. The university has a plan to give similar trainings to the community and on selected issues, Basazinew added.
It is noted that the training on traditional malpractices given to Chertekel Kebele residentials has brought awareness and let them stand against these practices. Thereby, participants of the training agreed to make discussions at every gathering to reach consensus and prepare rules and regulations that prohibit practice of traditional malpractices. Futhermore, Debre Markos University will evaluate, monitor and support the community in working with eradicating traditional malpractices, he concluded.
Mr. Getie Wagaw, Chertekel Kebele Administrator, on his part says that the training enables to create awareness on traditional malpractices that affect the social and economic aspect of their life. Thus, they will share their understandings to others when they meet at different gatherings. Debre Markos University assures its responsibility to the community and has to continue working with problems of the community, he added.
Since head persons of different community organizations participate in the training, they can work together against the traditional malpractices uniformly. He thinks that the responsibility of the University to train and graduate students at their discipline rather than giving such community services. Thus, working to alleviate the problem of the community is a wonderful mandatory activity, Mr. Getie suggested.
Netsanet Simachew, a Grade 9th student at Haddis Alemayehu Secondary School, also states that she will work towards awareness creation on traditional mal practices at her and her friends families and the community having taken the training.
