Debre Markos University Law School gives two days training on the prevention of early marriage

DMU:- Debre Markos University Law School gives two days training on the prevention of early marriage to the people drawn from Wojel and Yesenbet Kebele, Awabel Woreda From 18-19 March 2017.

Mr. Haile Andarge, Debre Markos University Law School Vice Dean, States that since community service is among the missions of Debre Markos University, it gives two days training for people drawn from Wojel and Yesenbet Kebeles, Awabel Woreda, East Gojjam Zone. The objective of the training is to decrease the social, Economical, and Psychological impacts of early marriage in the zone and the country at large.

It is noted that definition of early marriage, reasons of early marriage, health, social, economical, psychological, emotional and physical impacts of early marriage, types of marriage, ways of early marriage prevention, legal rules of early marriage and other related issues were points for discussion.

Mr. Haile in his explanation briefs about impacts and practices of early marriage at national level, research based figures, reasons for early marriage, preventive ways of early marriage, types of marriage and documents of legal rules against early marriage in line with Ethiopian rules.

Dr. Askalemariam Adamu, Debre Markos University Institutional Quality Assurance Directorate, Director on her part States about health, social, economical, physical, emotional and other problems of early marriage. Dr, on her explanation indicates woreda, Zonal, regional and national problems of early marriage using research evidence and her own experiences. On her explanation since early marriage is being practiced irrespective of Ethiopian Family Law which prohibits marriage under 18, it is causing several physical, psychological and economical troubles.

Participants make detail discussion on their formed respective groups with the questions paused by the participants and make reflections accordingly. The trainers consolidate answers for the questions in time with the training document.

It is noted that participants of the training were kebele Administrators, managers, Health Extension Experts, police forces and some peoples drawing from  security using from kebeles’ of Awabel Woreda.

Finally, Mr. Basazinew Dires, Debre Markos University Training and consultancy service officer says that Debre Markos University is working to minimize and even to eradicate the practice of early marriage through community awareness creation. Thereby, collaborative effort of leaders at each hierarchy, elderly people, health professionals, security bodies, religious fathers, and other stakeholders are demanding to work against early marriage. The university will work together with kebeles and make follow up on the progress of the kebeles’ activities against early marriage, he added. For this, the community should know and understand the areas where Debre Markos University is giving free legal aid services, report and request for the service to prevent the practice of early marriage, he remarks.
