DMU:Debre Markos University Animal Science Department distributed the newly improved grasses to the surrounding farmers. The distribution was taking place at four Gozamin Woreda kebeles from August 17-18/2017 and noticed that more than 85,200 single Densho and Setariya grass species were distributed with the presence of experts of the woreda and kebeles.

Assistant Professor in the department of Animal Science of Debre Markos University Dr.Birhanu Alemu States to the experts and farmers about the newly improved grass, as it has double roles. The newly improved grass is important to keep the animal production for cattle on one hand and conserve the soil from erosion on the other hand. Furthermore, it plays significant role for animals feed confidently.

For that matter, Debre Markos University compound beautification directorate prepares grass nursery in the compound which exceeds ten permanent grass species bringing from Finoteselam, Sinanworeda, Bahir Dar University and other nearby woredas, Dr. Birhanuadded.

It was noticed that the improved grasses are able to grow everywhere where little water abundant with fragmented plot of land. Then, talking with the zone Animal Science sector in depth the university has a plan to distributethe grass to many areas. Lastly, the grass could be to every cattle/ animals and therefore it is advised to feed the grass periodically to keep the nutrients of the grass.

Gozamine woreda Animal Science Sector representative Ato Esuyawokal Tiruneh expresses that Gozamin woreda especially the kebeles that the grass has been distributed are the special localities where adequate cattle are found and known for cattle breeding. Therefore, the grass is advisable to be distributed for famers to feed their cattle with some plot of land, he added.

In the end, Debre Markos University promised to work with the interested woredas to distribute grasses elsewhere. On this condition the woredas should involved plans to bring their maximum usage more than 50%, on this regard, DMU, is also witness to be on behalf of them.
