Debre Markos University hosts a workshop on push-pull technology

DMU: Debre Markos University Conducts workshop to implement push-pull technology in order to combat stunting weeds. Works are also done to disseminate biogas technology to the massive users at most.

Dr. Getnet Atinafu, Research and technology transfer directorate director in Debre Markos University, officially announces the participants and the objective of the workshop held at the moment.

Assistant professor Genet Degu, Vice President for Research and Community  Service of Debre Markos University states that Debre Markos University is carrying out its prominent activities of community service program after screening the problem tangibly and critically via scientific research.

On this regard, to get rid of problem observed in maize production once and for all, Debre Markos University conducts the workshop occurred on the selected East and West Gojjam Zone districts. Furthermore, Agricultural Sectors, Cooperative organs, farmers, experts from Debre Markos University and others also participate to adopt and use the technology actively, she added.

During the occasion, Dr. Tewoldebirhan Gebreegziabhier, Cooperative Organ in the institute of Sustainable Development, narrates that the workshop is crucial to reduce soil erosion to preserve the ecological system of the land and to improve the natural agriculture systems by increasing the fertility of soil, productivity of crops and to preserve the soil nutrients from the earth surface dealing with the nature of the land rationally.

The helping organ from institute of sustainable Development and Tewolde  G/Egziabher  wife, Sue Edwards on her side states that agriculture is a complex system of activties so that everybody ought to employ technology that enhances productivity and fertility of soil to bring green economy as of their forefathers did.

The members of the project from Debre Markos University Dr. Mesfin Abate and Dr.Birhanu Alemu have presented the detailed description of push- pull technology implementation from the theoretical perspective to its implementation.  Maize is highly produced in Eastern and Western Gojjam Zones.  However, it’s highly harmed by stunting weeds, which reduces the production from time to time. Due to this fact, being with other universities and cooperative organs/ institutions, Debre Markos University is also implementing push-pull technology to eliminate the problems and to increase soil fertility. The technology is called strip cropping, they explained rationally. Mr. Nigussie Habtemariam, the member organ of the project, clearly elaborates about biogas implementation.  Regarding, questions were raised and ample responses were raised accordingly.

Debre Markos University Agriculture and Natural Resource college staffs, Eastern and western Gojjam Zone selected woreda concerned bodies, woreda and zone administrators, cooperation organs, Debre Markos University research team organs, farmers and others were participants in the workshop.

Finally, the participants observed the field trip to ‘Abalibanos Kebele, Gozamin woreda to have a look at the push-pull technology and the biogas preparation.
