DMU Medicine students take Comprehensive Exit Exam

Debre Markos University School of Medical has given comprehensive exit exam (also known as qualification exam) for fifth year medicine students before joining clinical internship. In line with this, the head of department of epidemiology Dr. Ermiyas Abebaw remarks that the basic intention of the exam is to identify students who are capable of doing their anticipated practical activities in Debre Markos Referral Hospital.

The exam has administered and invigilated by the school teachers and external physicians. In doing so, the students have checked as they are capable enough to treat patients besides other physicians.

Furthermore, the internship is considered as a comprehensive tool to enable students exploits the theoretical knowledge they got during their four years study and execute into practice.  This finally could make them efficient and capable of doing every activity practically.

Hence, the internship is for 13 consecutive weeks it is expected to bring change on the students’ clinical viewpoints.  In doing so, Debre Markos University School of medicine teachers will supervise the students and provide relevant and adequate feedback for the sake of improvement. Hence, the teachers will conduct a general overview on the students’ progress and capability as to how they are effectively addressed the clinical internship objectives.

As a matter of fact, all students are not supposed to join the internship class unless they are fulfilling the courses requirement. This means, a student who did not score pass grade within a single subject, he must enrolled for the course and learn for 7 weeks again and take re-exam through their teachers. Nevertheless, if the students fail more than a subject, they would take all the subjects throughout the year. Therefore, passing or qualifying in courses is a criterion to the internship.

Finally, Dr. Ermiyas remarks that Medicine students are expected to be skillful, knowledgeable and ethical to handle the internship program properly, legally and honestly and then make themselves ready to serve the community.
