Debre Markos University the directorate of Community service intensively works on curing of Podoconoisis at East Gojjam Zone woredas. Debre Marko University community development officer, Mr. Abiyot Molla states that the University has worked long times now with different donors and non-government organizations to cure podoconoisis. It was spatially functional in Sinan woreda, Rebugebeya and Gozamin woreda Abalibanos health care centers. Thus, more than 78 patients have been treated from their high-level illness of the disease.
On the other hand, Debre Markos University Community Service Directorate Director Dr. Mihret Alemayehu elaborates that donors and non-government organizations have finished their agreement on podoconoisis curing and prevention project. They have given to the former health centers to let the treatment continue so far. Thus, it was 86% effective of curing the patients from their fierce illness. However, because of the blunt nature of the disease, the patients are stigmatized from the community. Low awareness, perceptions, attitudes and other related reasons were some of the reasons to overlook the distribution of the disease.
Nonetheless, as the termination date of the term of reference of donors and non-governments organizations, Debre Markos University again carrying out the project in collaboration with zone health department and health insurance institutions. The university is strongly keen to discuss on the issue of podoconoisis with the zone health department and health insurance to endorse the service at health centers and let the service continue much better than before.
Hence, the health insurance institution agreed to offer 10% free services for needy groups. In doing that, the zonal health departments are working endlessly to gather reliable information and truly screening of the needy groups and the diseased ones engaged entirely from each woreda. Therefore, this cooperation consolidated the service to cure podoconoisis from the entire woredas in Eastern and, if possible, western Gojjam Zone Woredas.
