Debre Markos University Community Service Directorate is working to increase the product and productivity of wheat growing farmers

DMU: – Debre Markos University Community Service Directorate is aggressively working in alleviating the existing problems of wheat growing farmers at Debre Ellias woreda, to increase their product and productivity through expertise and scientific possible solutions contribution to the disease happened on their cluster wheat crops.

It is noted that Debre Markos University Community Service Directorate delegates have been supporting and assisting wheat growing farmers of Tija Goter and Guay Integrated Wheat Producing Farmers Associations through the course of their wheat cultivation since the time of plouging their farm lands, sowing the selected and integrated wheat seed, supplying with fertilizers, supporting in the wedding process and making progressive follow ups on their wheat crops.

In addition, Debre Markos University Community Service Directorate has made visit on Tija Goter and Guay Integrated Wheat Growing Farmers Associations cluster farm lands. Thereby, Debre Markos University Community Service delegates observed problems on these Associations’ wheat farm lands. Thus, they are conducting researches on the identification of the causes of the diseases whether it is related to the type of the seed they used, the increase in volume of water during the season and other related factors and to find out possible solutions that would increase product and productivity of the farmers.

Mr. Solomon Ali, Debre Markos University Agriculture and Natural Resource College Instructor and Community Service Coordinator, says that “Debre Markos University Community Service Directorate has been supporting wheat producing Associations through professional consultancy and support including financial support. Though the Directorate could not fully support the wheat growing farmers due to the global pandemic CORONA, Agricultural Professionals have been supporting wheat producing farmers in increasing product and productivity of their wheat products,” Solomon added. Farmers should harvest their wheat products properly appropriately and timely and identify the seed affected by the existed wheat disease to avoid communication of the disease to the normal wheat seed. Farmers should pay due emphasis in the selection of appropriate seeds before they use and apply crop rotations in order to avoid this type of problems, Solomon underlined.

Mr. Dagnachew Ayalew, Chairperson of Guay Lake Markos Wheat Integrated Seed Producers Association, says that “members of the Association sow about 250 hectares of land using Kekeba and Agolche integrated wheat types obtained from Amhara Integrated Seed Supplier Organization ad GIS Nongovernmental Organization.

Debre Markos University will also help the association in alleviating the existing wheat disease through their research findings and follow ups, MR. Denekew expressed his belief over the University.
