Debre Markos University staffs start training on Science and Higher Education Policy and 10-year Strategic plan, key accomplishment indicators

DMU: _ Debre Markos University staffs start a 2-days training on the deliberation of Ethiopia’s 10-years Strategic policy and key accomplishment indicators designed by Ministry of Science and Higher Education’s (MoSHE) from 18th to 19th March, 2021, at Debre Markos University main campus, Hadis Alemayehu Venue.

Speaking on the opening stage of the training, Debre Markos University President, Dr. Tafere Melaku says that the ministry has initiated tremendous reforms that enable it to discharge its responsibilities in producing a professional and capable workforce. The 10- years Ministry Of Science and Higher Education Policy and Strategy plan and key accomplishment indicators training, according to him, will help improve the education system national wide.

Tafere said, the aim of this training is to introduce Ethiopia’s 10-Year Strategic Plan on education roadmap based on policies, strategies and programs where core objective is to reach consensus on these aspects and each university’s strategic plan has to be aligned with the national one. And also we want to ensure the planning on science and innovative technologies will make us successful at continental and global level.

Tafere stated that Debre Markos University 10 and 5 years Strategic Plan Designing and Development Committee, which was established a year ago, has been working aggressively on governance, quality, institutional development, equity and access of education  and in other areas. Thus, members should be thanked and recognized for their commitment and best deeds. The University’s Strategic plan was shared to the national Universities by MoSHE, Tafere remarked.

In his concluding, he underlined  that the training should be participatory, focused, relevant ideas development and instead of being question and answer it shall be forwarding important ideas that may have relevance for the contribution of the improvement of the national strategic plan.

Debre Markos University Academic Affairs Vice President,Dr. Yiheyes Aregu, delievering presentation on Higher Education Policy and Strategies emphasized that there is need to clarify prevailing wrong notion on Ethiopia’s education policy. Discussion on education philosophy, major policy issues, objectives and challenges involved will give an idea as how to approach at it and it will make them ready for its implementation with clear-cut guidelines. Your constructive remarks probably help us to revisit education policy and make it result-oriented Yiheyes remarked. Thus, quality education is the epicenter of the strategic plan. Thereby, MoSHE tabled the strategic plan for discussion and additional inputs.

Yiheyes added that they need to prepare curricula that will enable graduates to be a job-creator and not just to look at the government for job thus establishing the culture of self-reliance and, all leaders and stakeholders have an important role to play and to see that it happens, he stressed.

Curriculum preparation and program relevance study must be done by the faculty and departments respectively that has to be nationally and globally acknowledged so as to produce competent graduates that will ensure development Yiheyes concluded.

It is noted that the training will be on Science Policy and Strategy to be presented by Dr. Mollalegn Tamiru, Debre Markos University Administrative and Students’ Affairs Vice President, Science and Development 10 -year plan, and key indicators by Sister Genet Degu, Debre Markos University Research and Community Service Vice President, Higher Education Development 10 year Plan and key indicators by Dr. Derjaw Fentie, Business and Development Vice President, Higher Education Development and Science Key indicators by Dr. Engineer Abebe Tesfahun, and Debre Markos University 5 year Strategic Plan by Dr. Askalemariam Adamu, Debre Markos University Institutional Quality Assurance Director for discussion. Then, a brief and detail discussions will be made in groups to come up with ideas that will strengthen the national 10-years strategic plan.
