Vision

In line with the vision of the Debre Markos University, the Department of Real Property Valuation has the vision to be the center of excellence in producing competent and creative professionals for the real estate industry, providing quality community services, and conducting problem-solving research by 2040.  

Mission

The Mission of the Real Property Valuation department is to produce competent graduates in the field land and real estate industry. These professionals are expected to carry out land and real property finance and taxation, real property development and management, risk identification and management of real property investment, feasibility analysis, law, property valuation, and market analysis.

Graduate Profile

Upon completion of the four years program, the students will be able to demonstrate the
following competencies concerning knowledge, skills, and attitude.

Knowledge

The candidates are required to be equipped with the necessary knowledge about:

  • Understand the Modern property valuation and taxation concepts, principles, and laws
  • Acquire specialized theoretical and practical knowledge of theories and key concepts of Real Property Valuation and Taxation
  • To have the know-how how to engage the public, especially property owners and property taxpayers in the process of property valuation, assessment, and taxation
  • Make use of the specialized knowledge and skill effectively and efficiently in the processes and procedures of Real Property Valuation and Techniques in Ethiopia
  • Acquire specialized theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the areas of marketing, Land, and Land related laws
  • The knowledge of how to implement and handle Appeal Mechanisms, Procedures, and objectives of property valuation and taxation

Skills

The graduates are expected to:

  • The skill to implement modern property valuation and taxation
  • The skill how to implement and handle Appeal Mechanisms, Procedures, and objectives of property valuation and taxation
  • Acquire specialized skills in installing appropriate software to allow property valuation and the skills to use IT systems in the assessment and taxation of real property
  • Develop the ability and skill of Applying GIS and Statistics for valuation and assessment
  • Acquire managerial, professional, and operational skills to deal with property valuation/assessment and taxation business Develop a capacity and skill to produce quality Real Property Valuation reports and research independently as well as in collaboration with others;

Attitudes

The graduates are expected to develop attitudes to:

  • Maintain personal and professional integrity, motivation,
  • high sense of responsibility by understanding and appreciating the ongoing developments in national and international spheres in the area;
  • Have a rational attitude about private and/or public matters

Professional Profile

Upon successful completion of the four years Bachelor (BSc.) study program ‘Real Property Valuation’ professionals will:

  • Apply knowledge, skills, and experiences acquired in real property valuation to Property taxation;
  • Organize and provide short and long-term training, workshops, seminars, etc. on Real property valuation and taxation-related issues.
  • Provide continuous, relevant, and constructive contributions to the improvement of the Real property valuation and taxation system in Ethiopia;
  • Understand and use contemporary techniques in real property valuation and taxation for the benefit of society;
  • Develop strategies to support real property valuation and taxation systems in the country;
  • Apply the relevant knowledge on planning, designing a research project, analyzing results, and use them in their profession;
  • Involve in tax mapping and valuing land and other properties.
  • Involve in negotiation and public engagement practices related to property valuation and taxation
  • Design an efficient and reliable real property valuation and taxation system
  • Value land and improvements for different purposes: buying and selling, compensation, mortgaging, taxation, insurance, etc.
  • Advise policy makers and concerned stakeholders on different land and land-related issues, laws, and regulations.
