Debre Markos University Community Service Directorate gives awareness creation training for secondary school students

Debre Markos University Community Service Directorate in collaboration with Gender, HIV AIDS and Disability Affairs Directorate gives life skill training for students gathered from Debre Markos town preparatory and secondary school students in Debre Markos University from 22-23 February 2020.

Mss. Haregwoin Assefa, Debre Markos University Education and Behavioral Science Institute instructor, states that the objectives of the training are enabling trainees’ to identify life skills that they need to have for their everyday’s life, developing skills to alleviate problems that they face, enabling them  to make correct decisions for their life, developing skills that could enable them to decrease psychological stress, be determined and save themselves from various problems, enable them to be good communicators and save and protect themselves from HIV AIDS and related diseases.

The whatness of life skill, types of life skills, importance of life skills, self concept and self understanding, communication skills, decision making skills, critical and creative thinking skills, importance of critical and creative thing skills, understanding rights and obligations, skills of assertiveness, skills of overcoming peer pressure, copying with stress and academic skills were among the major points she briefly explains and substantiates with tangible examples.

Mahlet Tamiru, Debre Markos Preparatory School grade 11 student, says that the training helps her and her friends to have clear understanding about life related issues and possible solutions to solve those problems they encounter during their firing stage.

In addition, the training enables them to have an opening eye visit in the University since it is their first time to intrude the compound of the university. Thus, in turn helps to have understanding about the life of the University which she and her friends were really surprised and amazed in, Mahlet remarked.

Yonas Alemaw, Debre Markos Secondary School grade 10, student, expressing his happiness for having the chance for the training states that the University shall broaden the chances for the students of the town since it will enable them to have clear understanding about the University and what is going on in the University and to work energetically for the accomplishment of their goals to join University.

Furthermore, the training will have a number of advantages as they are confronting with pressures from their peers due to adolescent stage. Thereby, the training will help them to keep themselves from HIV and related issues, he underlines.

Finally, participants of the training remarked that the University should widen the chance for other students in giving awareness creation trainings.

It is noted that participants of the training were students gathered from Debre Markos Preparatory, Debre Markos Secondary, Ethio-Japan Preparatory and Secondary schools.
