Debre Markos University HaddisAlemayehu Cultural Studies and Ministry of Culture and Tourism develop strategic plan for the development of Geez Language

Debre Markos University HaddisAlemayehu Cultural Studies Directorate in collaboration with Ministry of Culture and Tourism Language, Literature and Translation Development Directorate develop strategic plan for the development of Geeez Language under the discussion held with the participation of stake holders from Regional State Culture and Tourism Office and scholars from Universities.

Assistance Professor Gizachew Andargie, DMU HaddisAlemayehu Cultural Studies Institute Director stating that the University does numerous activities under HaddisAlemayehu Cultural Studies Institute, the development of the strategic plan will have multifaceted advantages. Thus, the University develops curriculum in two fields: Geeez Language Literature and Music, Gizachew mentioned.

The strategic plan for Geez Language development is developed by the initiatives of Ministry of Culture and Tourism in collaboration with Debre Markos University under the support and discussion of concerned bodies from Ministry of Culture And Tourism, Amhara National Regional State Culture and Tourism Office, academicians from Wollo University, Wolkite University and Gondar University, Gizachew added.

Assistance Professor Genet Degu, DMU Research and Community Service Vice President speaking at the opening floor says that DMU is aggressively working focusing at the endowed developmental issues of the community under HaddisAlemayehu Cultural Studies Institute in relation to language, history, culture and heritage administration.

Genet Degu remarking Geez Language as the pre-existing language, she indicates that many histories, knowledge, philosophy and many relevant and secrets are written in Geez Language. Thereby, the individual efforts being exerted in different areas and institutions will come together and work towards the rehabilitation and development of the language which in turn brings back the country’s reputation and development.

Understanding the relevance of Geez language in rehabilitating and fostering the country’s development, Ministry of Culture and Tourism in collaboration with concerned bodies and academicians from various Universities design strategic plan for the development of Geez Language. Thus, will enable Universities to implement it and gather the knowledge documented in the language so as to transfer to this generation.

It is noted that the strategic plan will have pivotal roles in the study of ancient history of the country, philosophy, folklore, heritages, traditions, aesthetics, medicine and other related issues which are written in Geez.

Making Geez language as medium of instruction, teaching moral education in geez, having center for traditional education and associating with modern education, creating awareness towards the use of geez language to the community, conducting national researches on the language Geez and related issues, establishing websites and social Medias for each institution are the objectives of the strategic plan. In addition, hosting national symposium, documentation and developing and using the language   are among the major activities to be done in the strategic plan.

On the same news, it is noted that Addis Ababa University,Bahir Dar University Wollo University and Axum Universities are the Universities which are giving training on Geez Language. Debre Markos University and Debre Birhan University are the Universities which design Curriculum on Geez Language to give training.
