DMU: The waste water treatment plant of Debre Markos University begins its first trial on November, 4/2017. The operation begins at 16 female students’ dormitories of the ground floor, communal latrine, dining hall sewerages, and laundries (washing vessels) are the trail areas of the treatment plant.

For successful operation of the treatment plant professional experts came from GIZ Ethiopia have devoted their knowledge and skill had-in-hand with the regular employees of the office in order to follow up and support the launching of the treatment plant.

The university wastewater treatment plant has the capacity to process all the sewerage vessels from the campus unless water problem faces. For this reason, Debre Markos University would restlessly work on consolidating the functional units of the treatment plant with the contractual agreement signed with GIZ Ethiopia. The University organizes technicians and other experts from Adama Science & Technology University for the better performance of the plant.

The manager of Debre Markos University wastewater treatment plant office Mr. Hailu Wubetu explains that the technology of the wastewater treatment plant is important to manage the waste water removal mechanism. As he said, the treatment plant basically helps to purify the wastewater contaminations coming from different vessels.  Sludge from meal houses, latrines and laundries could be able to purify and the water would serve for irrigation purpose for the nearby farmers laterally.

The main critical problem on the university to make the treatment plant functional before this time was lack of water. Currently, Dedesa, Meskelu and Aba BizunehGurd water sources become functional to supply water for the university in general and the treatment plant in particular. Moreover, the water in reservoir is also enough to operate the plant, Mr. Hailu added.

Furthermore, the wastewater treatment plant would help teachers, students, administrative workers and other co-workers to use bathrooms on each building as to solve the problems observed in the university officially.
